Ablation
Ablation is a medical procedure that aims to destroy abnormal or unwanted tissue using energy sources such as heat, cold, lasers, radiofrequency or electrical current.
Relation to Endometriosis
In the context of endometriosis, ablation refers to the technique of burning, vaporizing or otherwise destroying superficial endometrial-like lesions (i.e., the tissue implants located outside the uterus) during procedures such as laparoscopic surgery. The aim is to reduce pain, bleeding and inflammation associated with endometriosis by targeting the implants. For example, one source states that ablation (also called “fulguration”) of endometriosis “is a procedure used to treat endometriosis by burning away the lesions (implants) present outside the uterus.”
However, because ablation treats primarily the surface of the lesions rather than removing their deeper root, it is considered by experts to be less effective than excision in achieving long-term control of endometriosis.
Important Note
“Uterine ablation” (“endometrial ablation”) is an entirely different procedure wherein the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is destroyed. This is a uterine procedure and is not related to endometriosis. It is used to treat excessive bleeding. Be aware of the differences: ablation for endometriosis versus ablation of the endometrium.
